The Anna Matchim
Learning Resource Center

The students and staff of St. Francis of Assisi are very proud of the collection of materials located in the Learning Resource Center. Each year money raised from Book Fairs and other monies allocated to the Learning Resource Center is used to keep the collection current and fresh. We purchase only the very best of children’s literature and materials to support our curriculum.

Mission

The mission of the Learning Resource Center is to create an environment which reinforces, enriches, and extends the classroom curriculum. The Center promotes life-long learning and the independence students need to adapt to a changing society.

Learning Resource Center Schedule

Primary Group

When children first enter Kindergarten they are introduced to “Mr. Wiggles”, a bookworm that promotes reading and proper care of the books borrowed from the LRC. You see, Mr. Wiggles lives in the LRC but is so shy he hides from the children. It’s fun to see how the children look for him in the LRC each time they visit. Some children are actually lucky enough to spot him!!

Each primary class visits the LRC at least once per cycle. This time is usually focused primarily on book exchange. Each visit lasts for approximately a half hour.

Children are permitted to check out one book at a time, unless special permission is granted from the teacher.
To check out a book, students must return the one they have borrowed.

Also, primary children are to return books approximately a week before major holidays - Christmas, Easter and June.

Elementary Children

Similar to the primary group, elementary children are scheduled into the LRC once per cycle, specifically for book exchange.  As elementary children are participating in the Accelerated Reading Program, these students are permitted to visit the LRC any day prior to Silent Reading time which takes place at 8:45 each morning.

The elementary students are involved in reading program called Accelerated Reader (AR). Beginning at the grade four level, students select books based on their reading level. AR’s three easy steps help teachers continuously guide students to appropriate books within their reading level. At the same time, it assists teachers personalize reading instruction and intervene with students who need extra guidance.

Here is how it works:

  1. Student Reads a Book: Students select and read books on their reading level.

  2. Student Takes a Quiz: Students take a short, multiple choice quiz about the book on the computer.
  1. Teacher Gets a Report: The computer records the quiz results and provides individualized feedback for the teacher and student.

Throughout the year students are expected to read a minimum of 10 AR books. Periodically, your homeroom teacher will provide you with an update of your child’s progress.

By clicking on the link below, you can access a list of AR books that are located in our LRC.

Once the primary and elementary groups have scheduled their specific times, the remaining time in the schedule is used by teachers, students and staff who would like to access the space or resources.

Note to Parents: Please encourage your child to return their book on time. Children are very disappointed if during LRC time they cannot exchange their book for a new one.

Policy on Lost Books

Lost books must be paid for or replaced. You will receive notification from the LRC should this become necessary. Generally speaking, a paperback costs $10.00 and a hardcover is $25.00.

Volunteers

Grade six students volunteer each year to help keep the LRC organized. They generally put books back on the shelves, organize the magazine section, and keep the area tidy.

We are always looking for parent volunteers to help in the LRC. If you have some time to spare, please call Sandra at the school.
